THE DEVELOPMENT OF Qur’anIc RecItatIon KNOWLEDGE IN TURKEY AND Tayyar Alt？kulaC’S WORKS ON THIS AREA

Qiraat, which has come into existence from the beginning of the revelation, has passed through various stages, and reached the present day as built on authentic knowledge from the Asr al-Saadah and through reliable channels; and, Islamic scholars have since put great efforts to ensure that it conforms to the conception, he book, and the Arabic language in grammatical terms. The Ottomans have further enhanced the heritage that they received from the Seljuk and have not failed to put any effort to become servants of the Qur’an. Although efforts undertaken in this field decreased in the late Ottoman Period and upon the proclamation of the republic, we see that they started to increase from the middle of the 19th century, and have today reached a pride-deserving height of development both in practice and in academia. The Presidency of Religious Affairs and faculties of theology have unarguably a great share in this success. Moreover, we should remember all persons and departments that carry out studies honoris cause in this field. In a nation that regards it a fundamental principle to serve the Holy Qur’an, there have come and passed, for centuries, countlessly many exceptional persons who have served the Qur’an and its qiraat, published works related to them, and set an example for the generations to come. People who have broken new grounds in this field shed light on the way forward for future generations. We are of the opinion that the 13th President of the Presidency of Religious Affairs Tayyar ALTIKULAC is one of the rings of the chain
