Liberal Nationalism and Turkish Nationalism: Is It a Dichatomy or Practicable Argument?

In political literature, the concepts of liberalism and nationalism are often considered as two conflicting phenomena. When we look at the arguments that reveal this contradiction; while liberalism argues that human's individual freedom is the most important political value; nationalism gives priority to collective requests based on race, culture, or other identities. While liberalism supports the people's right to vote, nationalism attaches importance to things that are not personel preference. In addition, another dimension of the conflicts between liberalism and nationalism stems from the criticism that they both tend to point to each other rather than the values that both concepts give priority to. This study will be divided into three sections. In the first part of the study, it will be seeking answer to "how is the positive link between liberalism and nationalism embodied". In the second part of the study, it will be given to the development stage of Turkish nationalism and its distinctive feature compared to the West. Afterwards, in Turkish political life, some of the scholars who are considered as liberal will be handled and finally, it will be discussed that how liberal nationalism is possible in the context of criticism of liberalism in Turkey
