CALLIGRAPHY PANELS INSPIRING “UMUT (HOPE)”

Abstract:

The word “umut (hope)” deriving from the root “Um-mak (to hope)” means the relief stemming from the possibility that something immensely wished might come trueand comfort and expectation arising from hoping. The clichés implying that the plights originating from sorrow and grief are always temporary and that a relief shall sooner or later come following a distress aim at comforting people so that they can easily get rid of their agonising feelings. Those promising clichés are put into “calligraphy” panels in Arabic alphabet so that they will always stay in sight. Sayings like “This will of course be over.”, “Do not grieve; indeed God is with us.” (Surah At-Tawbah, 9-40) that have been put into panels with calligraphy repeatedly by calligraphers in various styles and designs have claimed their places in the world of art. The objective of this study is to determine the sayings inspiring constructive and positive implications to people and also that have been put into panels
