The Relationship Between Social Protection and Economic Growth

Social protection theory and practice in low-income countries has progressed rapidly in the last decade. Social protection is an effective response to poverty and vulnerability in low-income countries; There is a consensus around the view that it is an important component of economic and social development strategies. The rise of social protection provides an answer to global trends. In this study, the effect of social protection on economic growth is investigated by ARDL method. In the period of 2006-2016, econometric applications are carried out with the data set of 21 low-income countries. The findings of the study show that the social protection variable, which is discussed, converges to the long-term economic growth average with the short term shocks occurring. In this context, it is possible to say that policies related to social protection are an important policy tool in promoting economic growth in low-income countries.
