Investigation of the Reading Speeds of Primary School Students Before and After the Half Term

Abstract:

The aim of this research is to examine the effects of the half term on the speed of reading aloud of elementary school students. The research is survey design which one of the quantitative research methods. The sample of the research is the students in a state primary school in Sorgun district of Yozgat. A total of 228 primary school students collected data. As a data collection tool, a text from Turkish textbook was used. The data were first collected at the end of the first semester and then in the first week of the second semester. As a result of the research, the reading speed of the first grade primary school students is 74 words before the semester, and the reading speed after the semester is 85 words. The reading speed of the third grade students in the primary school is 89 words before the semester, and the reading speed after the semester is 93 words. The reading speed of the fourth grade students in the primary school before the semester is 86 words and the reading speed after the semester is 99 words. The reading speed of the primary school students before the semester is 82 words and the reading speed after the semester is 91 words. There is a significant difference between the reading speeds of the first and second grade students before and after the semester t(92)=10,37, p <0,01. There is no significant difference between the reading speeds of primary school third graders before and after the semester break t(62)=1,57, p> 0,05. There is a significant difference between the reading speeds of the fourth grade students of the primary school before and after the semester t(71)=7.78, p<0.01. There is a significant difference between the reading speeds of primary school students before and after the semester t(227)=9,64, p <0,01
