A Research on the Effectiveness of Supportive and Educational Courses; Kutahya Province Sample

Abstract:

It has been aimed to determine the effectiveness of supportive and educational courses opened under the supervision of National Education in this research. The study was designed through mixed method by using both quantitative and qualitative research models. The mixed research model is a model in which quantitative and qualitative methods are used together in order to make sense of research problem, explain and analyze it in a better way. 269 students studying at 3 different middle schools in Kutahya city center and 24 teachers working at these schools from different branches in 2016-2017 school year participated in the research. The research data were collected via semi-structured interview form developed by the researcher and Supportive and Educational Courses Students’ View Scale (?ncirci et al., 2017). Supportive and Educational Courses Students’ View Scale includes two dimensions of “Usefulness and Importance” and “Interest and Motivation”. Cronbach’s alpha coefficients of the scale’s dimensions are respectively .95 and .91. The overall Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of the scale is .94. Descriptive analysis was used for the qualitative data of the research, descriptive statistics for the quantitative data, t- test for determining the difference of two groups, ANOVA for determining the difference of three or more groups and correlation analysis for describing the relationship between groups. According to the results of the research, Supportive and Educational Courses provide equality of opportunity among students, bring doing-test habit to the students and prepare students for high-stakes tests, they are beneficial for them to compensate their educational deficiencies but there are still some inefficacies (for example source books, absenteeism etc.) in process
