Comparison of Basic Medical Sciences Course Hours and Number of Academic Staff in Medical Faculties

Backgrounds: Medical education methods has been discussed for many years, various standardization definitions were made and new educational methods are became a current issue parallel with developments in technology. Being an enviable physician requires having perfect theoretical background as well as clinical experience. Medical faculties may be inadequate in terms of equipment and number of academic staff due to rapid increase in the number of medical faculties in our country recently. Also this situation may be affected the professional skills of physicians. Aim of the study is examine the changes in basic medical sciences course hours and the number of academic staffs according to varied medical faculties in Turkey. Methods: The curriculums of 41 medical faculties from 82 medical faculties in Turkey, which can be accessed via the internet communication, were recorded.？ The number of academic staff members in basic medicine departments was determined. Statistical analyzes were performed using descriptive statistics. Results: The lessons with highest course hours were biochemistry (149 hours), pathology (127 hours) and microbiology (124 hours) while the lessons with least course hours were medical history and deontology (14 hours) and behavioral sciences (18 hours) subjects. It was determined that Ankara University had utmost academic staff (108 lecturer) among other medical faculties. In addition Amasya University had no academic staff in basic medical sciences department. Conclusions: It is obviously understood that there is no standardization among universities in basic medical sciences education in Turkey. This may lead to different development of the medical faculty students occupational？ skills. ？Quality standardization in medical education may be achieved by carrying out basic medical courses from a common curriculum center
