REFERENCES OF HADITHS IN THE QUR’AN ACCORDING TO IMAM AL-SHAFI’I

The Methodists have agreed with the principle that actions should be taken in accordance with ahad hadiths that cause doubt in terms of prov- ability. However, they have fallen into disagree- ment on the circumstance of acting in accordance with ahad hadiths and suggested different con- ditions. One of the condi- tions suggested by Hanafi and Maliki Methodistsin this regard is that ahad hadiths should not have any provision in contra- diction of the Qur’an. In other words, ahad hadiths should find their referenc- es in the Qur’an. Imam al-Shafi’i, then, deals with the references of ahad hadiths in the Qur’an through two different methods as accepting and denying them according- ly. He uses this method not in the identification of hadiths but in whether or not preferring them. The debated method of ref- erence among the Meth- odists causes doubt as it is based on theoretical / inferential knowledge.This is the reason why the Methodists fall into dis- agreement on the matter of inferring from / acting according to such hadiths although referred to in the Qur’an and considered contradictory. This meth- od of ‘reference in the Qur’an’ is employed by muhaddiths as well. It is, however, limited for use with only a small number of ahad hadiths
