In 1879, he accompanied Heinrich Schliemann at the excavation site of the antique city of Troy. In the book entitled Ilios-The City and Country of the Trojans by Schliemann, Virchow wrote not only the preface but also two appendices, namely Troy and Hissarlik, and Medical Practice in the Troad in 1879.
