Breast Biopsy Results in Women under 40 Years-Old

In Turkey and also in the world, breast cancer screening with mammography starts at the age of 40. In women under 40, imaging is necessary if there is a complaint or family history. Under 40, the first step breast imaging tool is ultrasonography. When a solid lesion is detected with ultrasonography if necessary core needle biopsies are done with ultrasound guidance. The aim of this study is to evaluate the results of breast biopsies under 40-year-old women. From March 2013 to March 2018, ultrasound-guided core needle biopsies done by one radiologist are retrospectively evaluated. Through a total of 363 patients' breast biopsies, 63 (17.36%) of them are consist of under 40-year-old women. Total 72 lesions of consecutive 63 patients' core biopsy were retrospectively evaluated. The average age of patients were 33.60？0.49 and range between 20-39. Histopathology of 72 patients were, 66 (91.7%) benign lesions, 5 (6.9%) malignant lesion, and 1 (1.4%) premalignant lesion. Only one of the 5 patients with malignant histopathology has mammography examination. The biopsy of 20 patients is done due to size increase of the lesions and the result of all 20 patients histopathology revealed benign pathology. In this age group, biphasic tumors and mastitis are the most common lesions. Under 40 there isn't a screening programme and but in our study, 8% of the patients has malignant histopathology. It is not rare breast malignancy in this age group and if there is a suspicious finding biopsy is mandatory.
