Abstract:

This study presents the optimal design of an AC microgrid with photovoltaic (PV) power generation and energy storage unit to reduce the electricity cost in Eskisehir Osmangazi University (ESOGU) campus. In order to verify the design, the proposed microgrid is modelled in MATLAB/Simulink and simulated over one day period by using the phasor solution method. In addition, the real time electricity consumptions of four different load groups that are connected to the selected bus in the campus have been obtained and included in the simulation model. Based on the generation and consumption data obtained over a 24-hour period, three different energy management scenarios are developed for the efficient operation of the microgrid. Therefore, a saving between 43.16% and 54.12% in total electricity cost and a payback time between 34 and 41 months have been obtained based on the analysis and the simulation results. Consequently, the feasibility study of the multi tariff energy metering with the proposed microgrid structure and the energy management strategy demonstrated the benefit and the significance of using renewable energy sources towards realizing a more efficient, economic, and a cleaner campus objectives
