SMART CITIES AND EMPLOYING INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGIES FOR TACKLING URBAN POLICY ISSUES

The increase of population in the cities, new developments in information and communication technologies and the divergencies of demands and expectations of the people living in urban areas enforce to change the city administrations. It is thought that limited public resources and crowded cities will be managed more effectively by leveraging the opportunities offered by innovative technologies. In this context, governments and municipalities give importance to smart city practices and projects in various parts of the world. Academic interest in this field is also increasing with a multidisciplinary approach due to the advantages of multiplicity of smart city projects. Government and various public agencies have developed smart city policies in a fragmentary manner in recent years. Municipalities, also, invest in smart city projects in areas such as transportation, public transport, water management and energy efficiency. This study focuses on new technologies depending on big data as the pillars of smart cities. The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between innovative technologies such as internet of things (IoT), big data, data mining, artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and Industry 4.0 and smart city applications
