Literary Evaluation of Halide Nusret Zorlutuna’s Poems Through the “Love” Theme

Halide Nusret Zorlutuna writes many poems from 1918 to 1960’s but her poems are generally evaluated negatively, she is seen as an incompetent poet in the literary history and criticism field. These evaluations are largely because of her insistence on the stable structure and comprehension of her poetry. Although she is a witness to, mainly, Servet-i Fünun’s poetry aesthetics, the occupational years’ poetry, poetry which opens to Anatolia after the establishment of the Turkish Republic, discussions of free verse, the “Garip” movement, “？kinci Yeni” poetry, she is not affected by the big changes in Turkish poetry. She keeps her own poetic understanding. Her poems are void of image construction, the daily language is generally not turned into poetic language in her poems and her poems are formed by the same themes. Love, which can be divided into three categories; human love, love for the nation and divine love, this is the most widespread theme in her poems. This article aims to argue why some of her poems are “good” and some not according to critics, using the criteria of poetry aesthetics and the literary evaluation through focusing on her poems, which contains the love theme
