An Evaluation of Phonetics in the Spelling of Jordanians Studying Turkish as a Foreign Language

The aim of this work is to study the phonetic mistakes in the written expressions of Jordanian students who learn Turkish at the A2 level. The investigation included 48 students studying at the Yunus Emre Turkish Cultural Centre in Amman, the capital of Jordon. The detected writing mistakes in essays are classified. Consequently, the sound information is divided into four sub-headings. These are; Vowel Harmony, Mixing of Vowels, Spelling Mistakes in the Word and Sound Events. As a result of the study according to the specified categories, the students made 888 mistakes in written statements. In particular, vowel harmony constituted the 46.4% (412) of identified mistakes; mixing of vowels 28.72% (255); the mistakes in the word 22.75% (202) and sound events 2.13% (19). Thus, the study identified the difficulties faced by the learners of Turkish language in an Arabic-speaking geography and observed that Jordanian students occasionally compare and mix their target language to their mother tongue
