Abstract:

The constant and regular supply of wheat for Istanbul, whose agricultural production was limited, was one of the subjects that the Ottoman statesmen emphasized. Until the last quarter of the 19th century, the wheat requirement of Istanbul was mainly supplied from the Black Sea coasts and the Balkans close to Istanbul, and especially after the early 19th century, the demands from the Mediterranean islands and coastal areas increased. Since the Coalition Wars in Europe at the beginning of the 19th century rapidly increased wheat prices in the Ottoman country, European traders flocked to Ottoman ports to buy wheat. This further deepened the problem of wheat supply of Istanbul. Antalya, where abundant wheat production could be done, was one of the Sanjaks that played a role in meeting the wheat need of Istanbul in the early 19th century. The documents show that in the early 19th century, 180 tons of wheat were regularly purchased for Istanbul. In Antalya, the purchase of wheat was carried out by people appointed as mubayaac?. Wheat was purchased mostly with m?r? price. The Antalya port had a significant role in transporting the wheat of Teke and Hamid sanjaks to Istanbul. Until 1825, the purchase of wheat from Antalya was very little interrupted. During the period under investigation, except for Tekelio?lu Rebellion period, wheat purchasing continued uninterruptedly
