RISE AND PROGRESS OF KUWAITI THEATRE IN TWENTIETH CENTURY

As in other Arabian Gulf countries, the movements of reform in Kuwait had started with renewing of education system. In 1912, by establishing of al-Madrasa al-Mubarakiya, it had been founded a modern educational system in Kuwait. And also with opening of al-Ahmadiya Madrasa in 1921, al-Madrasa al-Qabaliyyah in 1937 and al-Madrasa al-Sharqiyyah in 1939, period of modernism in Kuwait had taken a new and rapid turn. In these schools which had modern methods, Kuwaiti entellectuals had decided to form a theatre group for each school to raise awarenes of people. Kuwaiti society who made acquaintance with theatrical activities by way of school theatre groups had assimilated this literary genre in a short time. The demand of Kuwaiti people had prepared a sufficient environment for theatre to gain wide currency in Kuwait. Thus, a lot of theatre hall was opened in the country under favour of Arab entellectuals’ encouragement, support and works who came from other Arab countries to Kuwait. After then the theatrical activities advanced in a while, these activities reached to a good level and they set an example not only for Arabian Gulf countries but also for other Arab countries. In this study, the factors are considered which help the theatre to reveal in Kuwait. Also it is informed about progress of the theatre by way of theatre groups which were opened in Kuwait schools. By this article, it will be given information about important personalities who contribute to Kuwaiti theatre and their Works in this field, also it is aimed to present the progress period of theatre which serves an important function in the advancement of literary development in Arabian Gulf countries
