THE ‘MARRIAGE BAN’ FOR SOLDIERS IN ROMAN EMPIRE

Abstract:

The “marriage ban” for Roman soldiers during their period of military service probably began with the reign of Augustus. After two centuries later Emperor Septimius Severus granted them the right to marry with their wives in 197 A.D. It is a strong assumption that the emergence of the prohibition could be influenced by the discipline in the army as well as by the demographic concerns. The ban, which is likely to be implemented as a short-term solution, remains in effect for about two centuries in a surprising way, though it bothers both the decision-makers and the decision makers. Despite the fact that many studies have been done by western scientists regarding the military marriage ban, the subject still maintains its first day ambiguity and debate. The legal dimension of military marriages in particular is the focus of discussions. This study, which consists of two main parts, briefly examines the causes and consequences of the emergence of the military marriage ban, the legal form, the historical course, the scope and the effect on the soldier
