AL-KIND？ AND ANCIENT GREEK PHILOSOPHICAL TRADITION

The attitude of al-Kindi, considered the first philosopher in the history of Islamic philosophy, towards ancient Greek philosophy appears completely symphatetic. Al-Kindi, who mentions the ancients with gratitude because of their contributions to thinking, bears strong traces of Platonic, Aristotelian, and Neo-Platonic philosophy. This article deals with al-Kindi’s approach to Ancient Greek philosophical tradition based on a study of his various short works, namely On First Philosophy, On the Intellect and On the Soul. It also discusses al-Kindi’s own philosophical stand vis-à-vis these ancient traditions
