Investigation of "The Name of The Rose" in The Context of Social Linguistics

The power of linguistic elements is closely linked to the tutelage focal points that provide the semantic integrity of social institutions and hegemony. For centuries, the points that the imagination of individual cannot reach, are considered by the sacred doctrines as dangerous areas surrounded by ontological and esoteric secrets. The dogmas born by this unconditional acceptance nurtured the scholastic darkness of the Middle Ages; it attributed a dogmatic innocence to sacred literature, the church has strengthened as the true subject of this game of innocence. The underlying paradigm, however, is to limit of rhetoric process via religious and instrumental syntax, thereby individual ideas is confined into set boundaries. Umberto Eco's novel titled "The Name of the Rose" tells us about the indicators based on the mentality of the era in a library that represents the darkness of the Middle Ages, based on syntactic reflexes and questions the mental codes on the path to enlightenment. In this article, scholastic thought is examined based on linguistics. Accordingly, the analysis of the indicators in the fiction is possible by making the semiotic structure in the deep structure of the narrative visible. In the light of this information, in this article, the relationship between this novel and social linguistics will be examined with the aid of hermeneutic. In brief, during this study, indicative codes in the deep structure of the narrative will be researched on the basis of discourse. In addition, the linguistic elements in the text will be analyzed through the postmodern and generative grammar approach that dominates the narrative
