Reading the Commodification of Education News on Advertisement and Advertorial

Abstract:

The problem of this study is to determine what kind of approach used by the selected newspapers representing the Turkish press has displayed on their educational pages through advertisement and advertorial regarding the commodification of education within the framework of new right-wing policies. In this context, the study is important about determining the increase of monopolization tendencies on the media and the commodification of education how much affected from each other. The theoretical basis of the study is constituted by a critical approach that problematizes the commercialization and privatization of education by conducting quantitative and qualitative analysis of advertising and advertorial related to education in selected newspapers. In the study, the newspapers which on the behalf of representing Turkish press; Cumhuriyet, Evrensel, Hürriyet, Milat, Milliyet and Ortado?u were selected. In this selection, the ideological references of the newspapers have been decisive. The study consists of quantitative and qualitative text analysis parts. The quantitative analysis section of the study included the numerical distribution of advertisements and advertorial published on the education news pages of the newspapers examined between January 1-December 31, 2016. In the qualitative analysis section, textual analysis of education-related advertisement and advertorial content of the newspapers was carried out. In this study, it was concluded that the developments related to public and private education institutions should be given equal coverage and conveyed to the society with all the aspects against the weight given to advertising and advertorial in terms of education journalism
