The Perspective of Sebilurre?ad Journal to 27th May 1960 Military CoupKeywords: Darbe,Sebilürre?ad,Din,Siyaset,Dini S?ylem Abstract: Awaiting a century yet, what could be considered as still young, the recent history of the Republic of Turkey has been the scene of various coups since 1960. In terms of their emergence, the May 27, 1960 coup is even more important because it is the first one in the history of the Turkish Republican. It has been proven how the people's resistance, especially the press, produced and can produce important results as of the recent July 15, 2016 coup attempt. This initiative is an indication of how the press can play a vital role in the course of any coup attempt through its communication of the President’s message to the public, in addition to the courage of President R. Tayyip Erdogan in achieving the basic initiative to mobilise the mass to resist the coup. In terms of the first intervention of democracy in the Republican history, the May 27, 1960 coup caught both the people and the politicians and the leaders unprepared. So much so that when the prime minister Adnan Menderes was informed that the army was going to take over himself, he said, “Such a thing will not happen, the Turkish army is not the army of the invaders”. Because this was the army that won the Independence War and dedicated the National Anthem to itself and did not allow to pass the forces of the occupiers from the Dardanelles Straits. However, we are aware of the unexpected and undesirable fact of the same army's May 27th intervention by turning it into a very bitter truth by forming an example in the Republican history. How was the attitude of Sebilürre?ad, as one of the highly effective periodicals of the period, in the face of such an important event? How has the magazine's view of this anti-democratic intervention viewed as victimized by the Court of Independence due to its religious publishing policy? How was the relation of the revolution with religion and clergy reflected in the journal? In the paper, the answer of such questions will be tried to be presented in detail. By using the documentary analysis method, primarily the 52 issues of the magazine published after the revolution and then all related numbers will be studied. In this context, although the scope of the communiqué is constituted by 27 May Revolution and Sebilürre?ad Magazine, the previous numbers about the people subject to the coup d'etat will also be taken into consideration. The purpose of the paper is to determine what kinds of lights can be reflected to to-day by presenting an analysis of the mind of the period through the press, coup, religion and political relations
