Premenstrual Symptoms of Midwifery Students In Terms of Some Variables

Abstract:

Aim: The research was conducted in descriptive-correlational pattern to investigate Premenstruel Syndrome (PMS) symptoms of midwifery department students of ?stanbul University Health Sciences Faculty in terms of some variables. Material and Methods: Population of the research included students (N=430) from midwifery department students of ?stanbul University Health Sciences Faculty and sample of the research included 361 students (83.95% of the population) chosen from the population with cluster sampling method. 69 students could not be included in the research scope due to several reasons such as absence, unwillingness to participate in the research. The data were collected by using student information form and Premenstrual Syndrome Scale (PMSS). Results: It was identified that the average PMSS scores of the students were 20.00±7.20 (potential distribution=7-35) in depressive affect, 15.05±6.45 (potential distribution=7-35) in anxiety, 18.08±6.12 (potential distribution=6-30) in fatigue, 14.84±5.96 (potential distribution=5-25) in irritability, 16.63±7.07 (potential distribution=7-35) in depressive thoughts, 8.34±3.26 (potential distribution=3-15) in pain, 9.81±3.58 (potential distribution=3-15) in appetite changes, 7.62±3.42 (potential distribution=3-15) in sleeping changes, 9.07±4.00 (potential distribution=3-15) in swelling and 119.45±37.14 (potential distribution=44-220) in total. It was found that the scores of the PMSS were statistically different according to the variables such as age at school, smoking status, body mass index, sexually active status, presence of anemia, chronic health problem, and presence of person with PMS problem in family. Conclusion: The students were experiencing health problems in the premenstrual period and many factors affect the development of these problems. Knowing the factors which affect PMS and the frequency of these problems is essential to solve the problems
