SEEKING THE TRACES OF ARTIFACTS OF HISTORICAL SILK ROAD ON BAKU OLD CITY IN THE IMAGE OF THE CITY

A study was conducted to determine the place of the ancient monuments of historical Silk Road in and about Baku Old City in the image of the city. The study was carried out in two stages. In the first stage, elements of city image in and about Baku Old City were identified according to Kevin Lynch’s method, using trained observer consideration. In the second stage a detailed interview was conducted with 23 locals who live in various parts of Baku. Then, an analysis of city image was conducted based on the results of the interviews. Assessment of the analysis helped to identify which historical elements of Silk Road, being at the historical core of the city, attain a place in the image of the city and how big that place is, and why some of those elements are memorable while others not. As a result of the findings, it was revealed that the participants perceived the internal city as a whole. This finding results in the fact that many important works in the region cannot be remembered individually
