The Silence of Civilization: Voice in the 1930s Etiquette Books Published in TurkeyKeywords: Uygarla?ma Süreci, Türkiye, Adab-? Mua?eret, Ses Terbiyesi, Garbiyat??l?k Abstract: In this article, it’s narrated how the civilizing process worked in the context of voice, around the books of etiquette published in Turkey in 1930s. In the main body of the article, the suggestions to decrease the volume are analyzed. The passages concerning the voice discipline and the warnings to use a proper dialect are scrutinized in particular. Finally, it’s explored how women are considered as a critical category in terms of voice discipline.
