Anti-Ottoman/Turk Realms of Memory in Hungary as a Component of Hungarian National Identity

Abstract:

Despitehaving given up some economical authorities, nation-states are still the most powerful political forms due to having monopoly of violence andcontrol over its borders. Besides, there is no other political form that could create more popular symbols than those implying national identity which nation-states provide.Nationalism is not only about building nation-states or giving reason for ethnic conflicts, but it is also the only phenomenon that can keep nation-states and national identities actual. Therefore nationalism has a vital role in the reproduction of nations and nation-states although both include inequalties and struggles. Although common history education and literary workshave the biggest share in the reproduction of a nation, creating realms of memory (lieux de mémoire) which provide visual sources of remebrance, also play an important role. In this study, places of realms of anti-Ottomans/Turks in Hungary (Mohács, Eger, Szigetvár)referring Ottoman times are to be explained. Due to having an important role in Hungarian collective memory, images of Ottoman times are still actualas they are represented in places like Mohács, Eger and Szigetvár. Here, a probable connection between these images and the most important current political agenda, namely anti-migration, is to be examined
