THE MIGRATION OF INTERNALLY DISPLACED PERSONS IN PERCEPTIONS OF INDIGENOUS SOCIETY: KHARKIV / UKRAINE CASE STUDY

Abstract:

This study was prepared based on the field study data collected in Kharkiv / Ukraine between September 2017 - September 2018. Migration in the form of internal displacement due to war and terrorism, handled as “case study” in the study refers to the displacement movement of the people to the interior of the country because of the Russia's annexation of Crimea and the pro-Russian separatist groups in the eastern Ukraine and the armed struggle of the Ukrainian state. Throughout the study, the effects this migration wave has on the region where it is directed and which social interactions it leads to through the local society perceptions were explicated. The population of the study consisted of the people of Kharkiv, who were exposed to internal migration of the displaced persons due to war and terror. The data were collected through observation and interview. For the interviews, a sample living in Kharkiv for at least 3 years and are not within the scope of IDPs, was formed. When the interviews were analyzed, it was revealed that a small part of the participants did not point out any problems and positively welcomed the issue; another small part of the participants found that the migration and migrants were considered as a problem. In the remaining part of the participants, IDPs perceptions were positive and tolerant. Moreover, they had a realistic attitude towards the emergence of serious problems. These results were consistent with the observations in the field
