Ali Haydar Emir Alpagut: His Life and Works

The main objective of this study is to reveal the life story of the writer Ali Haydar Emir Alpagut and his works. He holds an important place in Turkish naval history. Ali Haydar Emir, who has been working as a teacher of naval history for many years in the Turkish Naval Academy (Bahriye Mektebi), has produced important reference works in this field with his books and articles on the history of the Turkish navy. His writings, especially after the proclamation of the Republic, have also been seen on social issues as well as literature and culture. Although he is one of the most important writers and intellectuals of his time, there is not much information available about his works which are of considerable importance to Turkish maritime history, yet are neglected by today’s researchers. Ali Haydar Emir’s family, education, military personality and professional activities were presented in this study with archival documents. In addition, this paper includes an analytical analysis of his works on Turkish maritime and an explanation of some of his views on maritime history
