Oppression and Censorship on the Axis of Power with Viewpoints of Artists

Apart from formal elements and content, the work of art is considered as a whole with the social structure of the age and the understanding of power. The social structure in which the artist is living and the power conception that shapes this structure have always existed in the artist’s work. Works as the products of critical mind can not only reveal the conflict between power and the individual, but also can transform any violent action of power - along with the values which belong to past anda re intended to be destroyed. Thus, these kind of art works can convey a provocative stance, aganist genocide with conscionce, censorship with a monument dedicated to democracy and violance with a simple smile. In this research, the works of the four artists selected from different geographies in various disciplines related to the concepts of oppression and censorship in the axis of power are examined. One of the common points in the selected works is that the artists have performed their works not only in terms of oppression and censorship in their own countries, but also in terms of their roles as a director and sometimes as an activist. Another common point is that the actions of power, that take place in the memory of individuals and societies, started with oppression and censorship and resulted in mass destruction, are dealt with by the artists in a counter discourse that strengthens the expression of concepts
