An Investigation of Sport Participation Motives of the Individuals Doing Recreative Sports and Competitive Sports

This study which investigates the sports participation motives of university students doing sports in different levels includes totally 250 volunteer samples, namely 103 women and 147 men from two universities selected by suitable sample methodology. Students were interviewed to collect the data via Sport Motivation Scale-SMS developed by Pelletier et al. (1995) and adapted to Turkish by Kazak (2004) and analyzed with SPSS. As a result of the study, it was revealed that the level of intrinsic motivation of participators is higher. The level of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation of competitive athletes is higher than recreationally directed athletes.
