Sicily, whose location turned it into a center of attraction during the course of history, had been the center of power so much that it could affect global politics between 9th and 15th centuries. During the 12nd and 13rd centuries, Sicily became the theatre of Papacy's struggle of power. Especially, Charles de Anjou and Aragonese king Pedro III took their parts in the political struggle of Papacy agaist the Hohenstaufen dynasty. Furthermore, Byzantine Empire, which had confronted contempt of the Catholic world, had to update its long standing balance policy.
