Employee Ownership: Domestic Capital Accumulation in Turkey

The study investigates businesses established by worker capitals which became a significant phenomenon in Turkey in the past term. The purpose of the study is to put a perspective over a developed business model supported by various fronts for directing capitals of Turkish immigrant workers in Europe to Anatolia, transferring it to production, its processes and problems from the beginning of its commencement. The study analyzes the subject of worker companies a story about the attempts of being ‘Turkish entrepreneurs’ of Turkish citizens who migrated European countries from Turkey as ‘Turkish Worker’ starting from 1961. In addition to being a business model, it was put forward to overcome capital deficiency problem in Turkey part of the spirit of that times. This study contributes to the literature in that it stresses stages of formation of Turkish private sector, domestic capital and democratic practices in Turkey by evaluating reasons of existence, practices and results of several cases. Because worker companies in Turkey as first samples of partnerships at industrial level provided lessons which provided many information in their failures although they included many problems.
