Geographical Survey of Bakirk？y District

BAKIRK？Y is a district of ？stanbul which has a long history. The main aim of this study is, to present BAKIRK？Y District’s characteristics, physical, human and economic geographical features taking into consideration the existing literature data analysis as well as geographic information systems. Located in the ？atalca-Kocaeli part of the Marmara Region, Bak？rk？y is a district in the southwest part of ？stanbul. As of today Bak？rk？y is among the districts of Güng？ren and Bah？elievler in the north, the Sea of Marmara in the south, the district of Zeytinburnu in the east and the district of Kü？ük？ekmece in the weast. Bak？rk？y, a zone of observation, has undergone a variety of geological formations. These geological formations are from the periods of Devonian (Paleozoic), Eocene (Paleogene - Caenozoik), Neogene (Caenozoik), Alluvion. A layer of schist and sandstone could be observed in the period of Devonian, limestone and conglomerate in Eocene, continental facies and marinal facies in Neogene, and depots of alluvion are seen at the coasts of Marmara Sea in Bak？rk？y. It seems the facts about the characteristics of the physical environment of the district would be a reference source for those who are interested in the town, and would give substantial contributions to governmental and special institutions and organizations in carrying out planning services for the future
