The Tombstones In The Graveyard Of Uskudar Ayazma Mosque

The tombstones, which have an important place in the Turkish plastic arts, have an aesthetic value depending on the changing and developing artistic values in history. These works reflect the emotions and thoughts of the era they belong to, their books and their ornaments, their artistic taste, their economic and social characteristics, their literary direction and their aesthetic concerns. In the article 43 pieces of tombstones in Ayazma Mosque Treasury located in üsküdar District of Istanbul were investigated. Of these stones, 26 are male and 13 are female gravestones, while the identities of 4 stones are not clear. These Ottoman Period stones are dated to the course from the end of the XVIIth C. to the beginning of the XXth C. In the study, the works were photographed and the inscriptions were read, the title types of the tombstones and the decoration features were discussed. The aesthetic appearance and the identity of the lying in the grave, the profile, the profession, the title, names used, nicknames, causes of death, diseases; wishes and wishes from the creator and the people; these works, which reflect important information about beliefs, are explained separately and finally a general evaluation has been made.
