Observations On Historical and Architectural Features Of Mardin Bazaars

The subject of the study is a total of 8 bazaars in Mardin. The study made general evaluations on the architectural characteristics of the bazaars (Aktarlar, Ayakkab？c？lar, Bak？rc？lar, ？ar？kc？lar, Marangozlar, Tellallar, Revakl？ and Zahireciler) in terms of layout, space, material-technique and decoration. These bazaars are one of the developmental stages of the Anatolian commercial architecture that formed over a long period of time and have different characteristics within the framework of regional architectural understanding. The aim of this study is to identify the physical texture of the trade zone and historically determine the formative, developmental and transformative stages and architectural characteristics of the bazaars, which are losing their function, in Mardin trade center. We believe that this study will be of interest to researchers who are interested in this subject matter. Developed in line with the geographical features of the city, the Mardin bazaars were open-air bazaars lining up the flanks of streets located in and around Grand Mosque. These bazaars are believed to have first emerged during the Artuqid era. They were devoid of any kind of decoration. They were roofed with a barrel vault and became organically connected with each other with the lining up of shops side by side over time. Craftsmen of the same or similar occupational groups carried out their trade on separate streets
