Abstract:

It is noteworthy that most of the research in the field of special education in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is related to special education services. This situation arises from the inadequacy of policies related to special education in the TRNC education system. Special education services are not only for individuals in need of special education, but also for the functioning of their parents, teachers, experts and the state. However, if the intellectual, behavioral and emotional processes are not supported by all affected groups, particularly by the family, failure may occur. This study was conducted with parents of children with special needs in the northern part of Cyprus. It has been investigated whether the needs and expectations are provided in terms of social support. If so, this study aims to determine the extent to which the parents of children with special needs find it to be sufficient. In the TRNC, there has been no study on the parents of individuals receiving special education. Therefore, it is thought that this research may shed light on future research into families with children with special needs. This study is necessary to determine the needs of parents, children and families in need of special education. The ultimate goal of the study is to facilitate physiologically or psychologically effective responses to the various needs of individuals. This can be achieved through the recognition of the target audience. The research was conducted with this awareness. The aim is to provide a source that will shed light on state institutions, special education institutions and related circles. In addition, in order to make parents of children in need of special education feel that they are not alone, it is possible to monitor the necessity of shaping the needs without ignoring the different developing individuals. In total, 161 parents participated in the study, all of whom had at least one child with special needs. It has been determined that these parents have access to the physical and material help they need. However, in the spiritual / psychological sense, the necessary support could not be obtained. It is seen that the social support they need can be taken from the surrounding environment and relatives. It is also observed that institutional structures that can provide this support in the TRNC are insufficient. In addition to the lack of state institutions working in this field, it can be understood that organizations such as non-governmental organizations, associations and foundations are not sufficient and / or have not reached
