MODERNIZATION IN MUSIC FROM TANZIMAT TO TODAY IN TURKEY

The main objective of this article is studying and discussing the change and transformation policies in music and musical view in the duration of Turkish modernization. This article is a literature review. A large number of books and articles have been researched which are written about the concepts; Turkish modernization, modernization in music and national music. By putting to gather the obtained knowledge and commentaries have been tried to gain a new perspective. Primarily a general definition of Turkish modernization has been made and focused on the reflections of Turkish modernization on Turkish music. Turkish modernization can be evaluated over two periods. The first period of Turkish modernization starts with the process of preparing the declaration of Tanzimat and ends with the declaration of the Republican regime. The second period of Turkish modernization is the first years of the Republican regime and the years of Single-party government. There were music policies among the first modernization policies which are implemented with the Republican regime. National music policy has been developed under the name of thought leader Ziya G？kalp. Under this policy, a new type of music was tried to be created. The aim of this article is to represent the impacts of this policies on society by taking into account their positive and negative aspects
