The expansion of higher education in Turkey (1980-2016): Some economic implications*

Higher education has been expanding in Turkey and throughout the world. This expansion has not been slowed down despite local and global economic crises. In Turkey, the numbers of higher education institutions and those who participating in higher education have increased despite 2001 and 2008 crises. In this study, statistical evolution of Turkish higher education during 1980-2016 period and its implications were analyzed with an economic viewpoint. Within this scope; higher education choices, numbers of registered students and teaching staff, higher education expenditures, and transition of graduates from school to labor market during the period are analyzed
