An Evalation on Waqfs of Berat (Albanian Belgrade)

Berat, also known as Albanian Belgrade, is one of the most important historical cities of Albania and it is an Ottoman town that has conveyed its historical texture to a certain extent till the present day. As in other Ottoman cities, Ottoman waqfs contributed greatly to the urbanization of Berat. In our study, the waqfiyyas and other waqf-related documents belonging to the waqfs established in Berat (named Albanian Belgrade in documents) will be examined so as to reveal waqf institutions. Berat is one of the cities with the highest number of waqfs within the borders of Albania. For this reason, preparing an inventory of the Ottoman waqfs established in the city of Berat is very important within the scope of the studies on Balkan countries
