Abstract:

This article examines the words bir ikintiske “to the second one, one to another” and bas?ra?- “to prevail, to rival” in the sentence bar?ada bir ikintiske bas?ra??p kunu? k?rma k?lurlar “They all oppress and push against each other” in Eighth Book of Altun Yaruk (Chapter 20). The word bir ikintiske which is peculiar to Uighur has been read as bir ikinti?ke by some of the researchers, where -?- is assumed as reciprocal suffix. Fewer researchers read the phrase as bir ikintiske and have claimed that the morpheme in question is the possessive suffix +si. Since the verbs which occur after the phrase often contain reciprocal morphemes (with reciprocal suffix -?-), it is usually assumed that the suffix -?- in these verbs affected the previous word; but due to the fact that the phrase is not used only with reciprocal suffixes in the Uighur and Karakhanid texts (as they occur in bir ikindike and bir ikintisi forms) and due to the phonetic and morphological rules of Turkish from past to present it was concluded here that the phrase should be read as bir ikintiske and the presence of the third person possessive suffix with its vowel dropped should be accepted. The hapax verb bas?ra?- examined in the second part is very problematic. Although it seems like the causative form of the Turkish verb bas- at first glance; due to the facts that the vowel of this causative suffix often occurs round and the noun form basir “deception, intrigue” (Lessing 1960: p. 90) was detected in Mongolian makes it difficult to decide on the origin and structure of the word
