Ethics in Journalism Movies: State of Play and Nothing but the Truth Film Analysis

Abstract:

This study aims to Show, how journalists are portrayed in movies. How the problems of the contemporary news media are reflected in cinema and determine the ethical approach of filmmakers. The films State of Play (2009) and Nothing But The Truth (2008), which are selected to show whether the actions of fictional movies main character of journalist in the films are ethical, are analyzed by ethical text analysis. Study; three ethical frameworks for ethical text analysis (John Stuart Mill- Utilitarianism, Immanuel Kant- Deontological Ethics and the Society of Professional Journalist’s Code of Ethics - hereinafter referred to as SPJ) are used. The reflection of unethical practices, in films, damages the integrity of journalism, the public’s opinion about journalists, and these, of course, couse a problem. ?n order to solve the problem, the research questions are determined as follows. How are journalists designed in movies? How do ethical discussions take place through the film about journalists? How are the problems of the news media reflected in the films? What kind of innovations does digital media bring to film production/distribution and display? What kind of ethical problems does it lead to? The findings show that journalist, ?n the movie, exhibit unethical behaviors in order to reach the truth, but at the end of the film, they act with the principle of public benefit to make many people happy. The methodological part of the research was based on the article Law, Melinda (2010) “TheGood, The Bad and The Morally Gray: The Ethics of Journalism in Film”
