Cock Kick: Horon Dance in Fatwas of Shaikh al-lslam

In fatwas of Shaikh al-lslam of Ottoman Empire, there exists important information which shed light on almost all fields of their period of time. In this work, it is aimed to determination and assessment of fatwas of Shaikh al-lslam concerning “cock kick” which is sort of a musical dance with religious content belonging to non-Muslim Ottoman citizens. Arrangement according to a certain system, Latinization, simplification and assessment of fatwas concerning this subject, which were understood to be given between mid-16th century and mid-18th century, were made. As a result, it was determined that the term “cock kick / horoz tepme”, as-mentioned in fatwas of Shaikh al-lslam, was a sort of dance made with religious purposes in the period of time of the fatwas, and on the other hand at the present time, it has a folkloric characteristic with a new name “to dance the horon / horon tepme” after deviating from its original purpose
