Investigation of Surface Properties of CoCrMo Tibial Component Machining with Carbide Tool

Abstract:

Due to its high strength, turning of tibial component made from CoCrMo material used in knee prostheses is faced with high cutting forces, pinking, vibration and tool wear. This situation both manufacturing cost and manufacturing time. In this study, the effects of surface roughness, vibration, surface defects and micro hardness on the number of revolutions and progress of turning of CoCrMo material with carbide cutting tool were investigated. As a result of the experiments, it has been found that surface roughness and defects increase due to the increase of the progress, and the roughness decreases due to the increase of the number of revolutions. In addition, CoCrMo alloy was analyzed by machining with finite element processing temperature distributions were also determined during turning
