Abdullah Sur’s Opinions on Economic

Abdullah Sur (1882-1912), the Azerbaijani Turks, was one of the writers who made a great effort in the field of literary criticism. Throughout his life of authorship that started in the ？ark-？ Rus Journal, he made important determinations and proposals by dealing with the main issues of the time and also the economic issues in this context. In this study, Abdullah Sur’s view of economic issues was examined by developing a reading upon his articles which he wrote on economics. The author approached the economic problems with an institutional point of view and in this context; he pointed to the effect of the mentality on economic practices. The followings make his ideas original: pointing out that precious metal accumulation which is a “mercantilist” approach will not provide economic development; suggesting that intellectuals should deal with economic issues as well as political issues; emphasizing the importance of education as a basic condition for improvement and development by acting in the mental background at the base of the problems; pointing out the importance of organizations in economic development (for agriculture and industrial activities); defending that being industrious, before the state, is the characteristic of the individual by exemplifying the people of Japan; Remarking that the notion of wrong fate, vilification of work and exhibiting inaccurate behaviours in economic life are the most important obstacles in the development
