Space at Time: “Old Street” Poem of Beh？et Necatigil

Time, the appearance of the universal entity indicated by the subject in the narrative plane, shapes the individual past of the narrators and the discourse history of the text with its meaning exceeding the quantifiable period. The qualities of the elements constituting the literary work and their relationship with one another become integrated with time, which is a concept that cannot be considered independently of humanity and human life. Space, whose borders are uncertain, and which is vast in magnitude, is a mechanism reflecting the value system of the individual and shaping the social structure as well as being a place to exist. Space, reflecting the status and standing of the individual in psychological and ontological terms in the line between the social and the individual, becomes distanced from being an environmental element and turns into an area of perceptional hesitance, escape, search, showdown and reflection. Necatigil also created works in literary genres such as radio games, essay-reviews, anthologies, letters and translations as well as poems during his 40 years of artistic life from 1935, when his first poems were published, to 1975, when he released his last book of poetry. He discusses the events that middle-class citizens experience in his poems, which were collected in fourteen different books and which bring the individual to the forefront. While houses and streets come to the center as the spaces in the poems he arranged within the triangle of house-family-close circle, time, being a concept that could not be considered apart from humanity and human life, also takes its place as a main category. In the study, the relationship of the individual with time and space will be examined within the dialectics of house-street / interior-exterior, these being the dominant elements of the poem “Eski Sokak”, which was based on the past and present, old and new, traditional and modern controversies and around this we will attempt to detect the human truth in the poem
