A Study on Developing a Reliable and Valid Achievement Test on ‘Light Reflection in Mirrors and Light Absorption’ Subject

The purpose of this study is to develop an achievement test on “Light Reflection in Mirrors and Light Absorption” unit in seventh grade curriculum by taking into account the test development steps. For this purpose, 30 multiple-choice and 7 open-ended questions were prepared in accordance with the learning outcomes. The achievement test was applied 180 seventh grade students from two middle schools in Kayseri during the spring semester of 2016-2017 academic year. The final form of the achievement test has totally 36, 29 multiple-choice and 7 open-ended, questions. The reliabilities of multiple-choice and open-ended questions were 0.82 and 0.78, respectively; whereas the mean of Kappa coefficients of open-ended questions was 0.82. The results show that it is valid and reliable to use the achievement test in scientific studies or classroom assessment processes, and it also can be used as pre-test and post-test by researchers who carry out scientific research in the field of science education
