The Effects of Teacher’s Support on Behavior of the Students in Risk Group

Abstract:

The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of social support provided by teachers on students’ school success, attendance and behavioral problems. This study, in which a quantitative research design was used, was carried out with 33 students aged 11-15 years and teachers of these students who are thought to exhibit risky behaviors in a public secondary school in Kocaeli. The social support provided by the teachers to the students involved in the study includes activities such as home visits, face to face interviews with students, incorporating students into various school activities and helping them to be accepted by other social groups. The student-behavior observation form and the student follow-up form which involves grades and attendance were used as data collection tools and the data obtained from these tools were analyzed by applying dependent group t-test. The findings of the study showed that social support provided by the teachers had positive effects on students’ behaviors, attendance and school successs
