A Study on the Processes of Activity Design by Prospective Primary Mathematics Teachers

Abstract:

The aim of this research is to investigate the processes of activity design of prospective primary mathematics teachers following their undergraduate education. The case study design among qualitative methods was conducted in this study. The participants were 12 prospective primary mathematics teachers who were fourth graders in the Department of Mathematics Teacher Training at Atatürk University. For data collection, interview and document analysis were used. Accordingly, separate semi-structured interview form was developed as data collection tool to investigate the processes of activity design by prospective teachers. Through document analysis technique, activity plans embedded in lesson plans prepared by prospective teachers were analyzed to support the data collected from inteviews. Content analysis was used as a qualitative research analysis technique for the data gathered through interviews. As for activity plans prepared by prospective teachers, descriptive analysis was done. The findings revealed that prospective primary mathematics teachers did not have enough experience and literateness about the processes of activity design
