Abstract:

The Armenian incidents that took place at the end of the 19th century, like many mission groups in the West, led the German Eastern Mission to operate in Anatolia and the Mission soon established a station in Anatolia. Due to the Armenian population it had hosted, Diyarbak?r and its environs had an important place for the German East Mission, where orphan and medical studies continued from 1898 until the First World War. In this study, firstly, information will be given about the German East Mission and its founder, Johannes Lepsius, then the conditions under which the orphan activities began in the region. Furthermore, it will be explained how the Ottoman authorities of the German Orphanage, built for the shelter of orphans brought from the excavations of Palu and ?üngü? together with those gathered from the center of Diyarbak?r, are following. In addition to these, information will be given on how the health work began with the special effort of Lepsius in the region and the course of such studies, which are expressed as "medical mission", in Diyarbak?r. As a result, the work of the German missionaries in Diyarbak?r and its surroundings will be evaluated in the light of the Ottoman Archives and German resources in the process that the Eastern regions have been exploiting the missionary occupation since 1896
