The relationship between reading comprehension and writing success of 7th graders at secondary cchool

Abstract:

Reading and writing skills begin to improve as soon as individuals start their education process. Reading takes place with the function of comprehension during functional and academic language usage while writing takes place with function of expression. Both skills develop when a great deal of common knowledge regarding written language is acquired because they are the skills which belong to written language. From this viewpoint, many researches have been performed since it is considered these two skills may be correlated. Accordingly, the aim of this study is to examine the relationship between reading comprehension and writing success of the 7th graders at secondary school. The study group at which relational screening model is applied consists of 171 7th graders who studies at a secondary school in city center of Hatay in 2017-2018 educational year. Reading comprehension test developed by Ate? (2008) was used in collection of the data related to reading comprehension success while Written Expression Assessment Rubric prepared for 7th graders at secondary school by the researcher was used to collect the data regarding writing success. The data was analyzed by using Spearman’s Rank Order Correlation Coefficient. In accordance with the research results, it has been found out that there is a medium-level and positive correlation between reading comprehension and writing success grades
