“Local Crime Prevention Program” in Cities for Local Governments

Security, that is providing a safe and secure environment free from the crime, comes at the first place of the public services offered to the citizens in the cities. Although central governments have a primary responsibility for establishing, maintaining and improving crime prevention policies in urban areas and providing safe and secure environments for their citizens, the actions that local governments can take to promote and maintain crime prevention in urban areas are crucial. The proactive approach that comes with the changing paradigm in ensuring security requires local governments to undertake important tasks in securing cities and preventing crime there. Accepting the fact that crime occurs at the local level, effective crime prevention policies must be implemented at the local level, with the support of central governments, to increase the likelihood of success. In this context, two common programs have been developed that combine the knowledge and experience of central government, local government and non-governmental organizations and can be used by multidisciplinary partnerships to enhance the effectiveness of local governments’ capacity in crime prevention in urban areas. This work focuses mainly on the "Local Crime Prevention Program" developed by the CSIR Crime Prevention Center and UN-Habitat, and this program is dealt with in detail. This article is important for the purpose of presenting action strategies and recommendations that can help local governments in crime prevention. It is believed that this article will help identify and implement appropriate policy implementations at local level in the context of crime prevention and fighting against crime in the cities more effectively
